Today I was planning to trek out to Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, but tourist fatigue took over; instead, I opted for a relaxing day. I visited the Jim Thompson House (and was fascinated by the story of Thompson, who revitalized the silk industry in Thailand and vanished without a trace in 1967) and Lumpini Park, each an oasis in this enormous city.
